ANU Za Kabuki Mirco Documentaries

ANU Za Kabuki Club is a student organisation who organises stylised Japanese classical theatre plays every year. I collaborated with the club executives to do a promotion project. We found out that only few Australian people know about kabuki, and most of the students in ANU get confused when they hear about the club, which is why we decided to produce two micro documentaries to introduce this art form and the club. One of the videos is about Za Kabuki actors and the other is about the backstage people. Through the two videos, we aim to present students’ experiences in the club and encourage more people to join us.

Opening Animation

In order to catch viewers’ attention in the first glance, I made a short opening animation using the new logo and brand graphics I’ve designed. This animation tells the vigorous and active vibe of the club, and also makes the club’s visual identity more recognisable.

Video Shooting & Editing

There’re two important parts in the first phase of the video making. Firstly, I did interviews with our main ‘characters’ - the actors and backstage people who told their stories in the videos. I asked a series of questions relating to their experiences in the club, so that they could tell what is fun to be a member. Secondly, I took a lot of videos of our activities, so that I got adequate materials for editing.

With all the raw materials got, I figured out a logical storyline to introduce and promote students’ experience with the club, and then edited the videos with the help from club executives and other members.
